FL tracks 1,579 287(g) agreements. Most have no public cost accounting. Here’s how to fix that.
Template language (adapt for your state’s public records law):
Dear [County Records Officer],
Under [state public records act], I request the following records related to the county’s 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
- Total county expenditures related to the 287(g) program for fiscal years [current and prior]
- Number of county personnel assigned to 287(g) duties and their compensation
- Any federal reimbursements received for 287(g) activities
- The current 287(g) Memorandum of Agreement between the county and ICE
- Any cost-benefit analyses conducted regarding the 287(g) program
I request these records in electronic format.
Tips:
- Check if your county has a 287(g) agreement: federallimits.org/[state-abbr] (county map)
- File online if your county has a public records portal
- Set a calendar reminder for the response deadline (varies by state, usually 5-30 days)
- Post results in the Evidence Library thread
