Template: How to FOIA Your County's 287(g) Costs

FL tracks 1,579 287(g) agreements. Most have no public cost accounting. Here’s how to fix that.

Template language (adapt for your state’s public records law):

Dear [County Records Officer],

Under [state public records act], I request the following records related to the county’s 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:

  1. Total county expenditures related to the 287(g) program for fiscal years [current and prior]
  2. Number of county personnel assigned to 287(g) duties and their compensation
  3. Any federal reimbursements received for 287(g) activities
  4. The current 287(g) Memorandum of Agreement between the county and ICE
  5. Any cost-benefit analyses conducted regarding the 287(g) program

I request these records in electronic format.

Tips:

  • Check if your county has a 287(g) agreement: federallimits.org/[state-abbr] (county map)
  • File online if your county has a public records portal
  • Set a calendar reminder for the response deadline (varies by state, usually 5-30 days)
  • Post results in the Evidence Library thread
